UAVs (Unmanned aerial vehicles) have been around for some time now in the spatial industry, and while the technology keeps evolving, the regulations that restrict their flights in urban areas limit their applications so far.

The truth though is, we haven’t seen any UAV application even as a proposal, that stands out of the pile of our traditional spatial or GIS industries.

Until now.

Amazon Prime Air is a new delivery system that has as a goal to get packages into customers’ hands in 30 minutes or less using unmanned aerial vehicles. As Amazon says, “putting Prime Air into commercial use will take some number of years as we advance the technology and wait for the necessary FAA rules and regulations” but it is quite clear that the evolution of UAV technology will not be limited to geospatial applications.
